AnteChamber Pavilion, London

The AnteChamber was the winning entry for AntePavilion 2021 competition, and undertaken as a collaborative project involving architecture student volunteer. It was organised by a major arts organisation supporting emerging artist and architects.

The Chamber is not site specific and can be transported, much like a camera, to wherever it is needed next. Based on the idea of a vintage camera, the pavilion can be demounted and packed. The two components of the base structure fit into one another, while the folding fabric top structure concertinas down into the base – turning into a boxed item easy to transport.

Using a bird’s nest as an inspiration, the AnteChamber was designed as a space for reflection and contemplation. Internally, the darkened chamber, with the smell of wood and cascading light create an immersive environment and also acts as a camera obscura.

The project made use of onsite materials from previous pavilions to minimize waste. To reduce the carbon footprint and the environmental impact, the whole project was reclaimed and built at its site in Hoxton.

Overall, the AnteChamber pavilion is an innovative and thought-provoking structure that showcases the creativity and skill of Studio_NS.

Studio_NimaSardar showed great deal of resilience to complete the project within budget. They put the effort in to bypass post Brexit and Covid costs and material shortages. They have managed to keep Antepavilion satisfied by working directly with the essence of the competition and what the site provided for them. It was also interesting to see how they approached and employed volunteers to deliver a sustainable, adjustable and transportable pavilion.
